When a pavement is structurally sound but has become eroded or deformed, it can be restored to it's original condition with a restorative layer of new asphalt. Typically, when large areas receive the new asphalt it is termed and overlay. When isolated areas receive this new layer of asphalt it is termed a patch. Oftentimes an overlay will be performed to increase the cross-section of a pavement so it can more readily withstand increased traffic loads.
